Episodes

A slightly-longer episode than normal, Dana and Dennis were joined today by former interviewees Anafe Robinson, Linda Williams, and Michael Dear.  We talked about 2020, this past fall semester, how we and our staff are handling the pandemic and WFH, and plans to relax over the next couple of weeks.

We had a bunch of good "I Dare You To" selections:

  • Dana dares you to watch The Mandalorian (seconded by many of us).
  • Mike dares you to unplug over the holiday break.
  • Linda seconded Mike on his suggestion, and threw in that we should watch Maleficent.
  • Anafe added that everyone should enjoy the holidays and take time for a nice, long walk (or two).
  • Dennis dares you to watch Home Town on HGTV for some uplifting television.

Dana was off handling a small family emergency, leaving Dennis to run the show on his own.  We covered a lot of news on the show, including:

Dennis's "I Dare You To Read" choices were books from his shelf:  Reader Come Home: The Reading Brain in a Digital World by Maryanne Wolf, and any of the books in the Encounter Broadsides series of tiny books on big subjects.

Although we started with the intent to do some "live news", we quickly switched to talk about the 2021 and 2022 CCCSFAAA conferences (updates coming to the CCCSFAAA website soon!).

We had a studio audience of one today - one of our regional reps joined us on the Zoom to see how the show gets produced.  Maybe soon we'll include him in our interviews on a future Friday.

Dana's "I Dare You To." selection was David Byrne's American Utopia.  Dennis' seconded her selection and also suggested people check out David's discography, including many albums with Talking Heads and collaborations with artists including St. Vincent and Brian Eno.

We talked about this past holiday weekend and gift giving to friends.  When we finally got around to the news, we covered:

  • A book edited by Professor Mario Escobar at LA Mission College made the 2020 Top Ten list at Latin Stories.
  • The National College Attainment Network updated their FAFSA Tracker.
  • Tips to improve your online meetings
  • An article at MarketWatch that showed how parents with high school sophomores can adjust their income and assets in time before completing FAFSAs for college in the fall of 2023.

Our "I Dare You To..." selections were a reminder to watch FARGO on FX (from Dana) and read Subscribed: Why the Subscription Model Will Be Your Company's Future - And What To Do About It by Then Tzuo.

Dana and Dennis were joined today by Ken Lira, Assistant Dean of Financial Aid and Student Support Services at Irvine Valley College (IVC).  We talked about how Ken started in financial aid, his schooling (go APU!), his work on his doctorate, and other financial aid topics.  We talked on financial aid research and mentioned a couple of reports from TICAS (Green Lights & Red Tape and After the FAFSA) and one from UC Davis - Wheelhouse (Money Left on the Table).

Ken's "I Dare You To" selection was to recommend everyone get out and take a drive (while still obeying all of the health warnings there are out there).  Travel, but travel safely.
