Friday Nov 20, 2020
Friday Nov 20, 2020
Dana and Dennis were joined today by Ken Lira, Assistant Dean of Financial Aid and Student Support Services at Irvine Valley College (IVC). We talked about how Ken started in financial aid, his schooling (go APU!), his work on his doctorate, and other financial aid topics. We talked on financial aid research and mentioned a couple of reports from TICAS (Green Lights & Red Tape and After the FAFSA) and one from UC Davis - Wheelhouse (Money Left on the Table).
Ken's "I Dare You To" selection was to recommend everyone get out and take a drive (while still obeying all of the health warnings there are out there). Travel, but travel safely.

Dana and Dennis were joined by former CCCSFAAA President (and current Director of Financial Aid & Enrollment Management at Sierra College) Dr. Linda Williams. We covered how Linda became involved in financial aid after serving in the Air Force, how she's served in multiple roles within CCCSFAAA, and her continuing work in financial aid and in support of her fellow financial aid peeps across the state. And, we talked about her beekeeping hobby (but is it really just a hobby?) and how it gives back to her garden and the orchards in her neck of the woods.
Linda provided an "I Dare You To" selection of Brene Brown, author/ professor/ researcher/ speaker and more. Ms. Brown has written numerous books, given TED Talks, and has her own podcast. Check her out!

Dennis's mid-show "I Dare You To..." selection was for people to try and memorize colleges and their Federal School Codes from the new 2021-2022 list. Dennis mentioned the book Moonwalking With Einstein by Joshua Foer (a previous "I Dare You To Read" selection).

Dana and Dennis finished their review/quiz of common acronyms in FinancialAidLand, covering: SSARCC, PPA, IPA, SSCG, TEACH, and OIG.
We also talked about both the 2021 (virtual) and 2022 (San Diego) CCCSFAAA conferences. Although there isn't a set theme for 2021, Dennis and Dana discussed some possible directions for us to take.
Lastly, Dennis's "I Dare You To Read" selection was the tiny Taschen book on the Case Study Houses. Exciting LA mid-century modern architecture.
Lastly lastly - we apologize for technical issues at the close of the show. Dana was having an issue with one of her cables that kept her voice quieter than we've ever heard Dana.

Dennis's "I Dare You To" selection was to suggest people put aside their streaming video services for a month and pick up some books. Any book. Fiction or non-fiction. Take the time to read and disconnect.
